Instructions

Rinse split peas and pick out any debris.

Add split peas, ham hock, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, and 8 cups water to a large pot.

Bring to a boil, skim any foam.

Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 60 minutes until peas dissolve.

Remove ham hock, shred any meat and return to pot.

Season with salt and pepper. Serve hot.
